A water softener removes hard minerals like calcium and magnesium from your home’s water supply through an ion exchange process. This prevents limescale buildup in your pipes and appliances, helps soap lather better, and prevents spotty dishes and dry skin.
How it Works
- Ion Exchange: As hard water flows into the softener's mineral tank, it passes through negatively charged resin beads pre-loaded with sodium. The beads attract the positively charged calcium and magnesium minerals, holding them captive and releasing sodium into the water in their place.
- Regeneration: Once the resin beads become completely coated in hard minerals, the system flushes itself using a concentrated salt brine. This saltwater wash forces the minerals off the beads, flushing them down the drain, and recharges the resin with sodium so the cycle can start over.
